Be Strong and Courageous

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

The command and encouragement: “Be strong and courageous.”

The problem: fear and discouragement.

The promise: “the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Remember:

The Word teaches that courage is rooted in who God is, not in our circumstances.

Fear, discouragement, and uncertainty show up when we are being elevated. In this passage, Joshua was stepping into leadership after Moses.

Here we are taught that we should be courageous based on our faith in God, not on our abilities. The assurance of God’s presence is the foundation for bold action.

Reflection:

Where in my life am I feeling fear or hesitation right now? Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous… He will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Gracious Father, thank you for being our ever-present help. We glorify you that you remind us to be strong and courageous in every area of our lives.

When fear and discouragement try to take over, remind me that You are with me.

Lord, guard my heart, calm my mind, and give me strength to walk boldly in what You’ve called me to do. In Jesus’ name, Amen
